John Von Der Au is Brother Johnson’s Great-Grandfather. Cpl Von Der Au served the Union from 1861-1865. Advanced through Kentucky and Tennessee with Shermans Army. John Von Der Au was wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain GA, hospitalized and returned to service at Atlanta, GA. With the Army he Marched to the Sea and Savanna, then turned north in the Carolina campaigns to Bentonville, NC in 1865.
Brother Johnson joined the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Major General Thomas H. Ruger Camp #1 by application at the Ruger Camp booth during the150th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher during the Fort Fisher anniversary celebration in 2015.
